| For many, an eight-hour work day is a thing of the past; technology has allowed (and required) us to be accessible far beyond typical business hours. What if we could squeeze more into our time at the office, becoming more productive and allowing us to step back a bit after-hours? Drawing those boundaries makes us work more efficiently throughout the day, experts say. We’ve gathered some industry leaders’ recommendations below, and we’d love to hear yours too. | Productivity Cheats: How to Make Efficiency Possible Put your goals on paper Whether you have deadlines, projects or client demands tying up your time and thoughts, put your goals for the day on paper. Emails and calls will fly in over the course of the day, but keeping your eye on three or four pre-determined tasks can help you weed out unnecessary “busy work” and extraneous activities. Schedule absolutely everything Once you’ve listed your goals, schedule the time you’ll need to accomplish those activities. Writing out what you need to be doing and when will allow your team to see when you are occupied, and will keep you on track. Don’t expect eight hours of productivity We each have a peak-productivity time of day; for many that is mid-morning through early afternoon. Whatever yours is, lean into those hours and make the most of them. For the remainder of the day, schedule small breaks – perhaps 5 minutes every hour – where you can allow yourself a mental shift of pace. Our attention spans, however efficient we may be, will never be eight hours long. Use your peak hours wisely and allow yourself to knock out the “busy work” at other times. Delegate, delegate, delegate Sometimes the smallest tasks add up to consume many an hour of our work week. Hand off projects – even just a piece of them – to your employees when you can. In addition to allowing them more responsibility and opportunity for growth, this frees up your schedule for more pressing matters.
